HVAC Repair Scams to Watch Out For

Everyone need air conditioning to survive the hot summer months and heating to survive the winter. If you’re A/C unit or heater breaks, you expect to be able to contact an experienced technician who will fix it in a reasonable amount of time. However, not all HVAC technicians or even companies are trustworthy. Here’s a list of what to look out for when it comes to scammy HVAC technicians and businesses.

Unnecessary Replacement of HVAC Parts – Beware of the technician who tells you that a working part needs to be replaced, especially if they might tell you that several parts need to be replaced. In reality, there usually aren’t multiple broken parts on your HVAC unit, even if it seems like it. It is typically one broken part keeping multiple parts from working properly.

So how do you know if what the technician is telling you is correct? You don’t. This is why you might need to ask multiple technicians from different companies about what’s wrong with your unit. Seek a second opinion, then a third, and maybe even a fourth and a fifth. Don’t tell any of them what the last technician had to say about your unit, because they might just agree with them without really looking at your unit. Let them figure it out on their own. If multiple technicians are agreeing that the same part is faulty and that it needs to be replaced, then you can probably trust their opinion and you should stick with using one of those technicians.

Promising You a Discount or Other Offer – Some HVAC companies will take the quickest and easiest route to get your cash. If they offer you a free service or an otherwise unbelievably good deal, don’t be so quick to take it.
