Air Conditioner System Checks
Before you turn on your air conditioner every year you should follow the basic maintenace tips below to
ensure your air conditioner is in good working order.
Be sure your condensing unit outside is not covered up and is clear of brush. The unit
needs to draw air into the system to cool inside. The top of the unit should have clearance from anything overhead including
eaves, deck, etc.
Turn on your air conditioner a few days before you really need it. That way if you have any problems you will
have enough time to schedule a service call to get your unit fixed.
Change your filters regularly. Dirty filters restrict air flow, reducing efficiency
or can cause the evaporator to ice up.
Clean any obstructions such as newspaper, leaves, etc. from around the unit.
Listen for odd sounds when your cooling system
kicks on. If you hear anything unusual, get in touch with your service professional so you can head off problems before they
become serious.
Be sure the thermostat is set in the cooling mode. Just setting the
dial below room temperature will not activate the air conditioning if it is set in the heat mode.
If your air
conditioner does not come on after switching the thermostat to cooling and adjusting the temperature setting, check the
breaker in your circuit panel. The air conditioner and heat pump needs a seperate breaker than the furnace, so you may
not be getting power to the unit even if there is air blowing out of the vents.
